We were looking for a new wood storage bock to fit the decor of our kitchen. Almost all of them are light to medium color. This one is a beautiful rich looking walnut with nicely sized slots. All the knives fit perfectly other than a very large Japanese knife. But the Wusthof large Chef's knife fit with no problems. It holds 6 steak knives. It's the prettiest of the Storage Blocks we've seen.

There are a limited number of wide slots if you have primarily wide chef-style knives. Despite the appearance in the picture, on the block I received, the edges of the slots were not cleanly fitted together; rather than the lines being perfectly perpendicular, the small slats of wood between the knife slots were pretty rough and somewhat hastily assembled. I ended up returning this block mainly because I didn't quite care for the color. It's kind of dull and ashy in appearance. In the end, I rated this down one star due to the sloppy appearance. I'm sure it would function just fine.

With the above said, one of the reviews on the knife block I ended up with (Wusthof 35 Slot Storage Block, Cherry) included specific dimensions of the slots, so I thought I'd break out the digital caliper and post similar measurements for this block. The sizes of the slots from top to bottom, left to right, are:

Maybe I was lucky but we love our Yoshi Blade. Honestly for $19 how could you go wrong. If you look at all of pro ceramic blades you see that they are significantly more than the Yoshi Blade. Think of this knife set as an intro to ceramic blades. I have never seen the infomercial nor the ad on TV. So when I got it it was mostly a curious tool to use in the kitchen. All I can say is that this blade is amazingly sharp. It slices tomatoes, citrus, bread, cucumbers and other veggies amazing.

I am a vegetarian so I have no experience with this cutting meat. It does slice through tofu very easy. The minus 1 star is sometimes it is very difficult to get the knife to start a cut. I believe it is mostly due to the design of the tip. If you have any skill in the kitchen with cutting foods you will easily figure out how to properly use this blade. Also, the peeler is more of a novelty and I have only used it with moderate success on carrots.

Always use a wooden or plastic cutting surface. Almost 100% of dulling of blades come from cutting on inappropriate surfaces such as granite, steel, mica; this is true for ALL blades not just ceramic. Check the web for videos showing this. Hand wash this blade, dishwashers will destroy it.

Pros:
+ VERY sharp when cutting mealy foods
+ Lightweight feels plastic but this is how a ceramic blade feels.
+ cleans easily (does not retain any smell from foods (even garlic))
+ price - are you kidding me? A ceramic blade for under twenty bucks?
+ slicing and dicing is fantastic - its like a razor

Cons:
- Cheap cover ( you should use it to protect the blade in the drawer)
- not too enthused with the peeler.
- Tip needs redesigning
- Not sure how you could sharpen it (although if you take care of the blade it should stay sharp a very long time)

Summary:
If you do not own a ceramic blade you should look at this as a fine intro to the class of kitchen utensils. I love mine so much I am buying a full set of pro models for our family for the holidays.

I received the Yoshi Blade knife in June of this year, used it normally for vegetables and fruits, and then yesterday, September 23rd, 2010 it breaks inside the handle. I call customer service to explain that I have only had it for 2 1/2 months, and all I get for a response is "the knife is out of warranty." Is there anything else I can help you with today?
Are you for real? Defective product! Even more defective customer services (if you can call it that!)
My wife made the unfortunate mistake of buying another Yoshi Blade and the blade chipped in less than 2 weeks!!!!!
If there was a rating one could give allowing for MINUS STARS, I WOULD RATE THIS PIECE OF TRASH THAT WAY!
DON'T BUY THIS! YOU'RE WASTING YOUR MONEY!

I'll admit I was expecting miracles based on TV ads, the packaging, and reviews I saw online. All I can say is, you get what you pay for, and this is only a $19 knife.

My first clue that this wasn't the end-all came from the package insert. The list of what NOT to do with this knife is twice as long as what you can do. You can't cut with it against just any surface, so my glass cutting board was out. You can't twist or rock the blade for fancy chopping, and you can't press on the side of it (like when you smash/peel garlic) My Yoshi did not quite slice a tomato like butter, the way the TV ads show. The short blade also makes it impractical for larger potatoes, onions, etc.

That all said, once I got over the limitations I find I reach for it often to cut up smaller things like green onions, chili peppers, carrots, etc. It works just fine and is definitely not a bad little knife for the price. You just have to be careful with it, because the ceramic blade is fragile if mishandled.

This was a gift for my wife who is going to Culinary School and uses Henckel Four Star knives. The two step sharpener works great and is very easy to use. A few strokes in slot 1, then about the same amount of strokes in slot II and the knife is new sharp again. The body of the sharpener is easy to grasp and really feels secure on the table with its rubber feet holding it steady as you run the knife in each of the slots. This sharpener not only works great but also looks great with its stainless steel body and frame.

I am the proud owner of 25 Henckels knives, largely due to a consolidation of two households. I was never able to get a truly sharp edge on these knives, regardless of the sharpeners used and I tried many different gizmos using different sharpening techniques. The latest was the motorized "Chef's Choice" using diamond encrusted wheels and magnetized knife guides for the proper sharpening angle. Doing 25 knives took about two hours at least and the result was usually unremarkable. Actually, the knives remained remarkably dull regardless of the effort expended with this noisy gadget. And then I stumbled across the Twin Sharp Duo Knife Sharpener. Somewhat encouraged by the largely positive customer feedback, I bought one and have never looked back. The process is silent, it takes less than one third of the time compared with the "Chef's Choice" and the results are remarkable. The knives slice through the edge of a sheet of paper with no difficulty, tomato skin is no longer a challenge and carving a side of beef or a turkey is a joy. Pulling the knives through the sharpening ports of the Sharpener at first seems to yield nothing, but after the third or fourth pass the steel or ceramic plates engage the knife and impart an amazing edge. Maybe I am over-reacting because all my previous efforts with other sharpeners were overly time consuming and did not yield good results. This one, however, is different. It actually works! Some have said that the gadget does not impart the same edge as a professional sharpening would and that may be true. However, I don't intend to shave with my knives and for demanding kitchen work they are about as sharp as one would need. I think Henckels has done it this time. This is a great sharpener!

I own a set of Henckels knives that are several years old. They are used every day and despite regular honing they were becoming dull. Keeping knives razor sharp is a skill that requires some practice and the right kind of sharpener, and so I was skeptical that one of these quick sharpeners would do a good job at sharpening them, but I decided to give it a try.

Does the sharpener make dull knives sharper? It certainly does, in just a few minutes. Does it make them sharp enough for routine use? I would say yes; I am not a professional chef, but I find that I am much happier with the performance of my knives after sharpening. Does it return them to their factory degree of razor sharpness? Unfortunatley, no. I think there is no question that my knives were sharper out of the box than I can achieve with this hand sharpener. But that does not mean that this was a bad purchase. It has restored my knives from being a bit dull to being perfectly adequate for the use they get in my kitchen.

If you want to achieve like-brand-new razor sharpness, this sharpener will not do that for you. If you want to bring your dull knives back to a degree of sharpness that will be adequate for 99% of home cooks, this would be a good item to have.

Let's face it -- when it comes to survival, you don't want to mess around. You need a tool that gives the biggest bang for the buck, and that bang needs to be useful, not just for show. In short, if you are in need of a knife for serious outdoor adventures, the Bushmaster is the one you want.

I'm not going to do another complete review because the one posted by Skull Fungus is superlative. Read it. Digest it. And then let me expand upon one thing. This knife is BIG. The blade itself is over 15" long. That is really long, folks. For a comparison, go down to your kitchen and look at a chef's knife if you have one. Those blades are usually 6"-8" inches long.

So, like buying "magnum"-sized condoms, let's be honest with ourselves and decide how much knife we really need. The knife itself is extremely well made and truly has many great accessories. Like Fungus, I'm pretty amazed at what you get here for the price at which you get it. No, you're not getting surgical steel. However, this blade will put up with years of use and abuse with proper care, and it's definitely not falling apart on you anytime soon. In the hands of someone who knows what he or she is doing and respects the blade, this could be an invaluable tool and could absolutely help a person survive in a wilderness environment.

In the hands of someone who doesn't know what he or she is doing and/or doesn't respect the blade, we're talking about losing fingers. Or worse. And no, I'm not kidding.

Bottom line -- awesome knife, great extras, but BIG. Just make sure you want/need this much knife!

If you want a decent survival knife without breaking the bank, this is for you.

The blade is heavy, comes sharpened fairly well, and even the typically redundant saw-teeth have a good edge on them. I am by no means a small person, so this knife works well for me. It may be a bit too big for others.

The handle and handguard are METAL. Yes, it adds to weight, but it's not going to be as prone to cracking during lateral blade movement as a plastic/kydex/playdoh/etc handle would be. Also, the tang appears to go halfway through the handle, right up to the hollow for the fishing gear. There is a small hole through the side of the handle that looks to be part of the mounting of the handle to the blade, however, it is the same diameter as the cordage that attaches the sheath to your leg, and could be used for lashing the knife to a pole for use as a spear.

The knuckle guard is metal and is removable by unscrewing the compass pommel, sliding the bottom of the guard to one side, and then sliding the guard down the blade. Good construction on this point...the guard won't come off unless you want it to.

The compass actually works and the housing is all metal. Weighty, but it won't break from side impacts. The 180 degree azimuth on the side of the blade is actually carved/lasered/nibbled in, not just painted on.

In the handle is a sealable tube. Inside that are a couple of fishing hooks, weights, a bit of line, matches, and a spare scalpel blade in antiseptic packaging. On the side of the tube is a listing of the alphabet in morse code.

The sheath is a kydex scabbard inside of nylon, can be worn on the belt, and can be fastened to the thigh with the provided cord or, you can replace the cord with paracord/shoelaces/etc.

At this point, the knife "might" be worth the price, but it's the extras that more than cover the cost.

In the three pouches on the sheath, from top to bottom, we have the following:

Pouch #1:

The famous P38 can opener. Probably the most kickass pocket item from WWII before the Zippo. Nothing else in this pouch, but there is a little room if you want to add on.

Pouch #2:

Snakebite Kit: contains a scalpel blade in an antiseptic package with a vial of iodine and a cloth tournquet, packaged inside of two heavy rubber suction cups. It also actually contains instructions for what to do in case of snake bite. Might swap the iodine for anti-venom, but overall, I'd keep it the way it is.

Flashlight: it's rather cheap, but if you're in the dark, it's better than nothing. Takes one double-A battery (not included). Typical "twist clockwise to turn on" action. Not the one pictured; I got a black one with a yellow lanyard. Will probably swap this for something a little more reliable.

This pretty much fills Pouch 2, but if you trade out the light for brighter LED model, you might gain a little wiggle room.

Pouch #3:

Stainless steel animal snare: good length with a decent gauge wire. Definately a keeper.

Whetstone: cheap and rather coarse. Would probably ruin the finish on the blade and I would definately trade this out, but in a pinch...who knows?

There's a little room left over for extras in Pouch 3, but that pretty much does it.

Conclusion:

It's well worth the price. I'd say that if you wanted one to go from the box to the outdoors, this would probably be the best bet. While there are things that i will change out, there is nothing on it that I would say is garbage/worthless....except maybe the whetstone.

The pouches are large enough to provide custimization of your gear, but small enough to keep from overloading. Most of the gear provided is great(compass, snakebite kit, animal snare, fishing kit, can opener) and the few things that would need to be traded out aren't "total" crap (flashlight, whetstone) they just provide the basics of what you would need.

It's not "MOLLE" compatible and it's not ambidexterous, but it does more than what you would need it to do. If you're a lefty, you're already used to working around stuff made for righties.

Lastly...IT'S ALL METAL!! No plastic to break if you lose your footing and smack into a tree. It's going to be there for the long haul.

For $40.00? BUY IT, BUY IT, BUY IT!!

Heck...Buy and extra for the missus...and one for the truck.

The first part of the review was based on what I got out of the box...this review is for one year down the road.

Long story short, the knife has held up well. No complaints on the knife itself or the sheath, but I did have to make a few upgrades (all available on Amazon)...

This set of knives is wonderful! It has a knife for every occasion! I've had the set for awhile now, put it through the washer quite a few times and they still look as good as new! Haven't had to use the sharpener yet and the way these knives still cut through everything I don't think I'll have to for a long while!! Great buy, highly recommended.

First these are made by a Chinese Company contracted to produce under and old American cutlery name so they aren't an American product . They are stamped steel . The metal in these knives is only fair in hardness and durability . The larger knives do a fair job but edge holding will not be a key point . If a cheap set of cutlery is what you can afford these are fair but there is Tramontina cutlery (many items produced in the U.S. too) which is a better cutlery and still cheap . I have had a set of those for 25 years and they are good cheap cutlery . The Steak knives in this set are a joke, get ready to sharpen them right out of the box . They do have comfortable handles though . I have used the screw driver on the shears to tighten screws on a couple cooking pans . I honestly bought these to take on picnics etc. and if one is lost I don't lose that much . If you can afford better I would recommend in stamped cutlery the Victorinox brand . Have those and although the blades are thin their heat treating and chill methods make a superior blade that's almost as good as a forged blade . They do cost a bit more though . I have tried to write a very honest review so hope it doesn't sound too negative . I do reside in Illinois and feel it's a shame a once great American cutlery company has become a basically a second rate company contracting it's products .

For a very inexpensive knife set, these serve very well. The blades seem to stay sharp for a long time. We don't use the steak knives much because I have a set of those we like very well, but I use the kitchen shears frequently, as well as the paring knives and the 7 inch knife.
The kitchen shears are fantastic. I want to pick up a couple spare pairs. They wash very easily and I use them instead of a knife to cut up chicken breasts for tacos, on tortillas to make corn chips and anything else I can think of instead of using a knife!

I have stained (but not sealed) butcher block counter tops. This product does a nice job hydrating & sealing them. I've noticed that when I apply it & let it sit, it will "redistribute" the stain a bit & hides marks/blemishes. I feel that I have to use the product about 1/month to keep the counters in shape (I was told waxing every 6 months would be sufficient), but I think that might also have to do with the cleaning products we use weekly. I have found that the wax will seep just a bit into things left on the counter (paper, leather goods), but I think that would be true for any of them. I FAR prefer this to oil. Hint: Use disposable shop towels to apply. Given that the idea is to make your counters "waterproof", it wil make a mess in your clothes washer!

Any professional cutting board conditioner is essentially the same product as laxative grade mineral oil you can buy at your local pharmacy. They are all based off crude oil, in some form or another. Despite the images on these bottles, unless you go with beeswax there is no such thing as all natural cutting board conditioner - it has to be crude oil based (thankfully it is healthy for consumption). There are two key differences between professional cutting board conditioner and laxative-grade mineral oil:

1. Scent
2. Thickness

Luckily, this one is mostly unscented which I prefer. However, while some might prefer the thick coat of a professional cutting board conditioner, it also tends to penetrate poorly into the wood. Whereas I could leave laxative-grade mineral oil on my wood and have it soak in a few hours later, this tends stay glumped on the surface. Some might prefer the thickness so that it is less likely to run off the side of the board (potentially saving you a mess), but I'll take the thin laxative-grade mineral oil at my local pharmacy any day.

Whatever you do, don't use olive or vegetable oil. That will go rancid and smell terrible. Use something that is derived from petroleum (mineral oil)

This is great for your cutting boards!! I use this interchanged with a more solid form of butcher block conditioner that I get at Williams Sonoma. This one is more liquidy and I use it to deep condition my boards. If you are a serious cook, you should protect your knives by using wooden cutting boards and in turn, protect your boards from scratches,stains, and smells with conditioner!! This has a nice beeswax scent (i.e. no scent) and I use it on wooden spoons, my cutting boards, everything wood in the kitchen. Wonderful product!!

I purchased these knives a couple of months ago after reading all kinds of knife set reviews from every site I could find. These are real nice and sharp! I especially like the santoku knives. They cut and chop tomatoes and onions awesomely. I wasn't too sure about the steak knives as they looked thin compared to the last set of steak knives I had, but after I used them they're are even better! As one reviewer said the larger knives do not line up when sitting in the knife block, but a small thing. They are still a really nice looking set. My son use to work as a chef in a large restaurant and he loved these knives. They are well made and I haven't experienced any rust. They sit in you hand perfectly. I do not put them in the dishwasher as I want them to last. If you want a nice set of knives without the high price, these are for you.

Well after searching and searching, reading review and reading reviews I decided on this set. I ordered them from [...] at first and then found them cheaper $[...] shipped at [...] so I canceled and ordered from them. Received the set and right away I knew I was going to love these knifes. Well balanced, well weighted, and feel great in hand. I was a little worried that the poly grip handles were going to be squishy but they are not at all. Just a very slight give and feels soft to the touch. I actually really like the poly grip handles. The steak knife handles are a little thin but still work great. The blades are nice and strong and sharp right out of the box. Spend a few seconds on each one with the included sharpening Steel and they just get shaper. There is only ONE thing that is somewhat bothering to me and most would laugh about this but when you place all the knifes in the storage block they don't line up perfect like the picture shows. After trying to rearrange the knifes you just can't get them to line up. This has nothing to do with the quality of the knifes and with me being extremely hard to please. This only bothered me for 5 minutes and I decided this set is WAY to nice especially for the price to let this bother me. They kind of make a rainbow shape when placed in the storage block so it looks ok. Like I said I am hard to please when it comes to quality of a product and this set pleases me. I have looked at many sets before purchasing this set and for only $129.95 I truly believe you will NOT find a better set. Maybe even for more money. I highly recommend you give them a try.

If you are a serious cook with serious knives this block is not for you. firstly; it stands upright which is the wrong angle for grabbing a knife as you prep. A slanted block is the only natural angle for the human hand/wrist to get a knife out smoothly. Secondly; a good chef's knife 6", 8" or larger does not fit into this without some part sticking out dangerously.
thirdly; a good sharp knife (which is what all knives should be) will slice the pieces of rods off.

stay with a solid wood knife block...best for you, best for your knives.

a very cute toy to put on your counter if you have a few small knives and you are into kitchen kitch.

I've had those wooden knife blocks-- couldnt get all my chef's /santoku knives in.

And then I upgraded to one of those wooden blocks with the black rod inserts-- I could put more variety of knives in, but still couldn't put that many, and the rods would break within the block and slowly you couldn't fit even the knives you had in there before back in. They just kept sticking out higher and higher even though it was quite deep. Eventually the side split open.

And now, this Bodum knife block. At last! So like the one I mention above (I think I had gotten mine at superstore), I could put a great variety in this one. AND, since the outside isn't wooden and rigid, when you stick a knife in, the slide poofs out a very little bit. You can't really see it, but that flexibility lets you put knives in and not run into limitations on how many you can put into the block due to space left between the rods! You are limited by space of all your handles and being able to grasp the right knife, but that's it!

We've purchased 2 of these knife blocks into which we've put 4 chefs/santoku knives, 2 bread knives, a cleaver (which I never managed to put in a knife block before), a tomato knife, 3 paring knives and a small santoku! I also a pair of kitchen shears and I have a rod knife sharpener in there. The latter sticks up (too long) but everything else fits right in.

I've only had these a couple weeks but I love them already. I read on some other reviews that the plastic rods come out and can be washed in the dishwasher. I didn't try that yet, but BONUS!

Oh! and the red color is quite nice. I would have prefered something more subtle but so far they only come in electric colors and black.

NEGATIVES:
The knives aren't offered to you at an angle like other knife blocks, but this is the case with most of these plastic rod insert type blocks, so I've gotten used to this already.

Oh! and if you have any of those knives with holes in the blade, those don't slide nicely in. I put my small santoku (with holes) into the block anyway, but putting it in wasn't like slicing butter (unlike all the others).

This knife looks nice but is very blunt and is quite difficult to cut with. So blunt, almost not safe when cutting veggies. I guess you get what you pay for.

Our knives were in pretty awful condition - I was getting tired of pushing the blade of the steak knife back in the handle every time I sawed through a piece of meat. Sure I'd love to have a set of top-grade Henckels but given the price of something like that plus the fact that we don't use knives that often, I figured this second-tier set was worth a try. The knives are nice and sharp. The construction quality is decent and it suits our purposes fine - they look good, cut well and fit in the block like they are supposed to. So what if they don't do well in the dishwasher? How much trouble can it be to hand-wash a knife? For $..., they're a fine deal. I'm glad I bought them.

We purchased these knives...and think they've been worth every penny. They're sharp, comfortable to grip, aesthetically appealing, and come in a nice assortment. Certain knives like the Chef's knife and the table/steak knives have become the proverbial 'work horse' of the set while the tomato knife hasn't really seen the light of day since it left the box. The polypropylene handles are capable of withstanding high temperatures and, because of their nature, do not harbor bacteria like some sets that contain rivets or those with wooden handles.

While this is a great set, it is not a high-end set, so you may want to look elsewhere if that's what you're after. None of the knives have a full-tang (where the steel goes all the way through the handle) or rivets. The handles are plastic. Also, the steel is from Japan (if I'm not mistaken) instead of Germany and boy, do the Germans know how to make steel!

So, dear friends, if you're looking for a set that you can pass on to your children and your children's children then you should indeed move up the Henckels line or look into Cutco (my favorites) or another high-end set. If you're looking to buy a good, inexpensive set that looks great and is every bit as functional, then look no more!

Also, consider looking into a pair of kitchen shears... they're indespensible!

This is absolutely the best paring knife I've ever purchased. I bought it after reading in Cooks Illustrated that it beat its more expensive peers in essentially all of their tests, and it has done the same in my kitchen. It is a little more flexible than most paring knives, though still rigid enough to be used with anything. I end up using it for tasks that would normally require a much larger chef's knife because it's so convenient and comfortable.

I generally use Wusthof Classic knives, including a Wüsthof Gourmet 4-Inch Paring Knife that costs $19. That's enough to buy three of these perfect little Forschner knives and still have some money left over. Do yourself a favor and buy the three Forschner ones.

Since my original purchase, I have bought at least 5 more of these knives for myself and others. Never will your loved ones be so thankful for a $5 gift!

I've had these knives for a while and have had no issues with them losing sharpness -- I occasionally run the knife over a sharpening steel just to make sure the blade is still aligned, but it really shouldn't require any care. And if you do have any problems -- hey, it only cost five bucks.

For someone who really gets into cooking, a knife this size gets probably more use than any other. It's just right for detail work like garlic, ginger, etc. I trust the Victorinox brand, I have owned Victorinox knives in one form or another for 30 years. The only ones that I am not still using are ones that I have lost. For the price, I don't know if there's anything out there that would come close to what you're getting with this knife.
